Time and Place: Julie Mehretu and Cy Twombly
This program celebrates the recently published MFA’s exhibition catalogue Cy Twombly: Making Past Present to accompany the upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
The exhibition’s curator Christine Kondoleon and her colleague Kate Nesin will offer a brief sampling of works by Twombly, illustrating the influence of Italy, where the artist lived for decades, and his travels in the Mediterranean on his art. Following, Reto Thüring, Beal Family Chair of Contemporary Art at the MFA, will be in conversation with Julie Mehretu, speaking about how her works relate to different places and times; past, present, and future. Among Time Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2020, Julie Mehretu has pushed the boundaries of painting for more than two decades. Her often monumental paintings and more intimate drawings and prints translate a range of activities, narratives, and histories into dynamic, layered abstractions in which different notions of place and time conflate.
